History

  • Franciscan Skemp Credit Union, as it is now known, has been serving its members since September 21, 1967. First organized under the name St. Francis Hospital Employees Credit Union, the field of membership included employees of St. Francis Hospital and their immediate families. A hand full of forward thinking, dedicated employees with the support of several Franciscan Sisters recognized the need for a financial entity centered on the philosophy of "the common good". Their hard work, enthusiasm, and extraordinary vision allowed the 55 original members (each buying a $.25 share in the credit union during its first month) to grow to 2900 members with over $14 million in assets.

  • Franciscan Skemp Credit Union has undergone many changes as its field of membership has grown. The name has changed as has its location, from a utility closet in the main hospital building, a former patient room, a former priest's bedroom, and the labor and delivery room in the old St. Anne's hospital building. In November 2005, the credit union moved to its present location at 605 West Avenue South in La Crosse. This is the first location actually owned and designed by and for the members, to better meet their financial needs. The new building now offers a drive-thru, member parking, enhanced handicap access and extended hours of operation never before possible in our previous locations.

  • Franciscan Skemp Credit Union's mission statement, "Meet our members' needs by providing quality financial services" may not have been stated in the same words, but the essence of that mission has been the measure of each and every new product and service offered to the members throughout the years and will continue to be the benchmark for our growth in the future.
